Cold and Wet
When you are so cold that everything shakes, all you want is to get warm. Our ride back from the Cedarberg on the bikes had spectacular moments, really beautiful spectacular moments, but the last four hours of the ride was in driving rain. And Ceres is cold, its not called the “koue” bokkeveld for nothing. That section seemed to last forever. I was so cold, hypothermia was starting to set in and I was shaking. It felt like I was doing an uncontrolled dance on the motorbike, all I could think about was being home, warm under wraps. You want something so badly and you just cant get it, it feels out of reach. The thing about this scenario was that I did make it home, I did get warm. I am warm. But the memory lingers on. The psalmist writes “as a deer pants for the water so my soul longs for you” the concept of thirst in an animal is used to describe the psalmists longing for more of God. That is a very intense description and I doubt that many of us can echo that sentiment. The truth is we just don’t want God that badly. If we did we would receive, we would get warm, we would be satisfied because has told us if we seek Him He will be found by us. So the question isn’t so much where has God been hiding the more truthful question is have we been looking. Do we want Him so badly that we are willing to set time aside and seek Him. Do we thirst after Him, do we need Him like I needed a hot shower. The unfortunate thing is if we don’t have this desire to seek the Lord, we will stay in the cold, we will stay thirsty. I enjoyed my bike ride, looking back I can even appreciate those moments of cold, the sky when the sunlight peeked through for brief moments, the feeling of adventure but I wouldn’t want to stay there. I wouldn’t want to live in that moment, even the darkest of times have a silver lining, something good we can reflect back on but we wouldn’t want to stay. No in life we want to experience and learn from our moments of thirst but then we want to move on to better times. God is the key, he is the one who can satisfy. Seek Him!
