Sliding Doors

I was doing a wedding yesterday and during the speeches the father of the bride gave a blessing to the couple. He said I hope that like closed shopping mall doors that open when you approach, that in life the right doors will open when you approach. As I heard it I thought what a great way of wishing someone well. That statement made me realise a fresh that we truly do need God’s wisdom and guidance in everything. In life, doors are opening and closing all the time and one wrong door could send you down a difficult and arduous path. That sounds so doom and gloom, make one wrong choice and its tickets. Admittedly we are more hit by some choices than others and they really can take us off course. But in no ways are our lives irredeemable if we go through the wrong door. I am heartened by the story of Samson, who after trading his Godly gifting and purpose for lusts and material pursuits, in the final moment of his life was able to take out more enemies and effect greater change for the kingdom than the sum of his life thus far. He had lost his vision, his life was reduced to a party trick, he was a joke. But in that moment he cried out to God and God heard. God empowered him to bring down the house as it were, giving God’s people an opportunity to rid themselves of the tyranny they were under. I heard one preacher describe God’s will as being like a GPS system. When you take the wrong turn it recalculates and lays out the new route to reach the destination. God is not floored by our decisions. However if we keep disobeying, keep taking the wrong doors we wind up very far away from where God intended us to be. The comfort to me is that at any moment, maybe even as you are reading this we can turn around, repent and head in the right direction. It might be a different route that we land up on but the destination is still available to us. Even the thief on the cross next to Jesus was able to reconfigure his destination by recognizing that God is more than able to take us through the right door. If you have got off track cry out to Jesus today, make a U-turn today. It’s not too late.
