Open Doors

I went into a restaurant last night where there was no one to greet us and no one to help us into a seat. Those working the place were on the opposite side of the restaurant and made no effort to help us or seat us. I thought it was a scene out of a movie. Anyway rather than stay and make an awkward moment worse we decided to find another restaurant. The restaurant we went to next rushed to help us and seat us. They were welcoming, friendly and served with a great attitude. There were tons of people in this restaurant, enjoying the food and chatting away. Whereas our first restaurant had 4 people in it. I sense a pattern. Its amazing how when a place is welcoming, organised and friendly people come back and they will frequent a place like that regularly. But when a place is not these things people are reluctant to part with their hard-earned money. In the same way our churches and our lives will not be frequented and enjoyed by others if we are not welcoming, organised and friendly. God is always willing to engage with us in our lives. He stands at the door and knocks. If we are, open if we are welcoming and organised enough to open the door he will come in and eat with us - He’ll relate and connect with us in a phenomenal way. We need to be careful that we don’t close the door on God or others; that we remain willing to engage and connect. If we don’t, eventually people will stop popping around, even God’s voice will become softer as our hearts become so closed. Let’s be welcoming, let’s be friendly, let’s be organised and show people to the seats of relationship in our heart. Our lives can become places where people and God congregate. A place of fun and enjoyment. A place filled with laughter and love. Like the Restaurant Manager, it’s time to train the staff of your heart not to close off but to keep the door wide open for what God has for us.

To some it's just getting wet, to others a boring, irrelevant religious act, but to me it is something that brings new life. Baptism. Even the word sounds impressive. We had a great weekend ...
